Meet Our Class (2018)


Premilla Nadasen is a professor of history at Barnard College and a scholar-activist who teaches and writes about race, gender, social policy and labor history. She is most interested in visions of social change and how poor and working-class people, especially women of color, have fought for social justice. She is the author of Welfare Warriors: The Welfare Rights Movement in the United States and Household Workers Unite: The Untold Story of African American Women who Build a Movement.


Madison Ailts is a junior majoring in American Studies and concentrating in Political Theory. Madi is the secretary of the Athena Pre-Law Society, the president of Sigma Delta Tau, and a Barnard Student Admissions Representative. After college, Madi plans on attending law school.


Francesca Carlos is a junior at Barnard College majoring in American history and minoring in political science. Francesca works with Christina Saint Louis on the media-related tasks of Mississippi Semester. She is the public relations chair for Liga Filipina of Columbia University and the communications chair for The Food Bank at Columbia University. Additionally, she works as a historical research assistant at Barnard and a library assistant at the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia. After graduation, Francesca plans on pursuing her PhD in history. Francesca is from Queens, New York and Quezon City, Philippines.

Rayanne Farhat is a senior majoring in Behavioral Neuroscience and minoring in Ethics & History.


Gaby Ferrell is working (with Janine, Fatima, and everyone else) primarily on the creation of the Mississippi Semester’s Women’s Economic Security Index. She is a Barnard junior majoring in American Studies and concentrating in Gender and Policing. She is a peer educator in Well Woman, Barnard’s health and wellness promotion office. After graduation Gaby hopes to go home to Portland, ME and support organizing for justice and freedom in her community. She is excited about collectively creating an abolitionist future.


Aubri Juhasz is a senior at Barnard College majoring in English and Political Science. On campus she serves as a deputy news editor for the Columbia Daily Spectator and a Residential Adviser. Aubri is one of two students responsible for managing this website and also serves as the class photographer. By the end of the course Aubri hopes to write several pieces showcasing the experiences of individual women on welfare and create a podcast discussing the current state of women’s economic well-being in Mississippi.    After graduation, Aubri plans to pursue a career in journalism.


Janine Ko is a senior at Columbia College studying Asian American history, ethnic studies, and computer science. Janine is from North Andover, Massachusetts.

Christina Saint Louis is one of two Media Relations Leads in our class. When not relentlessly forwarding her friends the latest inspirational how-to article, Christina can be found at a cappella rehearsal or working with the Events Management Office at Barnard College. She is a junior at Barnard majoring in American Studies with a concentration in Media & Popular Culture and minoring in Political Science. Click here to read her blog contributions.

Alicia Simba is a Junior at Barnard College from Dar-es-Salaam Tanzania, majoring in Political Science and minoring in Education Studies. On campus, she is the Vice President of Policy of the Student Government Association and the Campus Outreach Chair for the Barnard Organization of Soul Sisters. Additionally, she works at the Tompkins Hall Nursery and Day Care Center and the Barnard Writing Center, and tutors weekly with Harlem Lacrosse and Leadership.


Fatima Koli is a Master’s student at Columbia, studying Data Science. She uses data science and spatial mapping to make a social impact. As the Course Assistant for this class, she is preparing the data and is helping students use Excel and GIS to create the index.
